Film Screening & Discussion with Guest Runners
Wednesday, May 16 at 6:30 PM - 9:30 PM at the Wenjack Theatre 2131 East Bank Drive Peterborough
The truth and reconciliation testimonies have re-enforced the notion that at the root of each spoken story lies the potential for healing. But for the story to reach its full potential and its maximum power, it also must to be heard.
You are invited to participate in a night of Truth and Reconciliation with the projection of the film Niigaanibatowaad:FrontRunners by Lori Lewis. The film tells the story of Indigenous athletes taken out of residential school in preparation for the Winnipeg 1967 Pam Am games, and their 800 km journey to carry the flame to the opening ceremonies. When the runners arrived at the stadium, they were not allowed to enter with the torch. Instead, a non-Indigenous runner was given the honour.
Niigaanibatowaad: FrontRunners is a story of survival, hope, reconciliation and a dream for a new beginning that transcends stereotypes and racism."
Very Special Guests, the FrontRunners, will be present for a post-screening conversation. Charlie Nelson, Bill Chippeway and Patrick Bruyere, three of the original long-distance runners from the 1967 Winnipeg Pan-Am Games Torch Relay will share their stories, speaking from the heart and relating their inspiring healing journeys.
The evening will bring together Indigenous and non-indigenous communities committed to reconciliation and the start of the creation of new memories.
This Indigenous-led evening offers a path to reconciliation, the full rundown and the names of the participants will be shared once confirmed.
