Re: Peterborough 7th Annual Spring Youth Conference ~ Friday, April 30th, 2010
9am to 4:00pm, Peterborough Public Library, 345 Alymer Street North, Peterborough Ontario
What: Global Youth Day (GYD) is an annual community-based youth conference organized by a youth working group in collaboration with the Kawartha World Issues Centre. This event brings together over 100 local youth to learn about global-local issues, to develop new skills and to learn from and network with other youth. This conference is planned and organized by a volunteer youth working group, which has been actively meeting since October 2009. Please find the conference schedule below.
Who Should Come?: Global Youth Day targets youth who are interested in issues of equity and diversity, social and environmental justice, and engaging in creative dialogue. GYD welcomes registrations from any youth, between the ages of 14 to 25 who want to get connected with issues or other youth wanting making a difference in their community.
We are inviting up to ten students from your group or school to participate in the conference.
Unfortunately, we cannot accommodate full classes as space is limited; and as a community-based event, we encourage representation from as many schools and youth groups as possible to enrich the shared learning environment at the conference. However, if more than 10 youth from a particular school are interested to participate, they may register and we will hold their names on a first- come, first- serve basis, until we open registration as space permits, on April 20th.
Lunch Networking Event: Is there an active youth group at your school or organization? During the lunch hour, youth will engage with featured community groups and school projects that are contributing to positive social and environmental change. If you know of a group of students interested in showcasing their group or project, please send an email to youthspeak@live.ca with GYD Tabling Event in the subject line by April 20th.
Curriculum Links: Global Youth Day presentations and workshops are appropriate to meet high school curriculum outcomes in Canadian and World Issues, Visual and Dramatic Arts, Social Sciences, and English, as well as any class that encourages community involvement in social justice and global issues. Participants are expected to attend the full conference.
Conference Registration: $5.00 or pay what you can on the day of the conference; includes a vegetarian lunch and snacks. Inability to pay will not be a barrier to participation.
If you are assisting a group of youth to register and have further questions, please contact me at 705- 748-1680 or kwic@trentu.ca. Registration forms can be found at www.kwic.info and be
●Emailed directly to youthspeak@live.ca
●Faxed to 705-748-1681
●Posted to KWIC, Box 895 Peterborough ON K9J 7A2.
If you know of other teachers, community groups and youth that should know about Global Youth Day 2010, kindly forward them this information. We would also appreciate any assistance to post the GYD posters in a visible place and announce the conference in your classes.
Global Youth Day is organized annually by a youth working group through the Kawartha World Issues Centre, and in conjunction with Global Youth Services Days ~ the largest international celebration of youth volunteerism in the world! We hope you will join us.
