Gender Equality Project (2023)
Amplifying Gender Equality (SDG 5) in Nogojiwanong/Peterborough, Exploring Issues and Solutions.
Project Goals
Amplifying Gender Equality in Nogojiwanong/Peterborough is a year-long project led by the Kawartha World Issues Centre (KWIC) from January to December 2023. We will amplify Gender Equality in our community through participatory action research via community conversations with a focus on the issues brought forward by our community. These conversations will inform community workshops to be offered Fall 2023 to local organizations, classes, and groups to further advance education on SDG #5 and spark culture shifts.
Project Context
We will build upon previous gender equality projects, to educate and engage local women and community members on 5 areas that emerged during our project Advancing Gender Equality Locally (2021-2022). These areas are: gender based violence, equal pay and work opportunities, equal leadership, sexual and reproductive health, and unpaid care and domestic work. We will continue to bring a gendered analysis to the underlying principle, Leaving No One Behind.
Project Activities
The community conversations will be a multi-generational initiative engaging in accessible, interactive sessions to enable women to speak from lived experience, learn about the targets and progress for the 2030 SDG Agenda and contribute to the collaborative development of workshops. Through strategic partnerships, we aim to directly engage 60 women in 6 community conversations, starting with an Indigenous voices community conversation. Community conversations will take place in Spring 2023.
The community workshops will be informed by the community conversations and localized, educating on how to advance gender equality and shift the culture. These workshops were a strong suggestion from the 2021-2022 project steering team. We aim to engage 150 community members through 15 subsidized workshops. Community workshops will take place Fall 2023.
