The Kawartha World Issues Centre (KWIC) is a small not-for-profit and registered charitable organization that connects people to global issues and local initiatives that can change how we understand the world and foster equitable and sustainable communities. About the Position

This position is funded through the Digital Skills for Youth (DS4Y) which aims to combine valuable work experience and training related to digital skills for underemployed youth between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age, so that they can successfully transition and participate in the new digital economy. Full eligibility requirements for this position are listed below.

The key responsibility of the KWIC Digital Communications Specialist is to evaluate, develop and implement a strategy which increase KWIC’s social media and web-based presence, public and donor engagement and education campaigns using existing and new technologies.

All work will be done in accordance with emerging Public Health Covid 19 Guidelines/Protocols.

Posting Date: September 13th, 2021

Type: This position is funded to March 31st, 2021 at 37.5 hours/week with possibility for extension.

Hourly Rate: A minimum of $18.00 per hour with some room for negotiation based on relevance of education and/or experience.

Training: There are funds for digital training through Pinnguaq allocated for this position.

Location: KWIC is based in Peterborough/Nogojiwanong, Ontario on the traditional territory and ongoing treaty lands of the Michi Saagiig Nishnaabeg including the First Nations of Alderville, Hiawatha, Scugog Island, and Curve Lake. This position can be flexible for the right candidate to include a hybrid of working remotely from home and on-site

Roles & Responsibilities

The Digital Communications Specialist will evaluate, develop and implement a strategy to increase KWIC’s social media, web-based presence and public engagement/campaigns using existing and new technologies (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Drupal, YouTube, Podcasts…etc.). The specialist will recommend and implement digital strategies to maximize digital opportunities available through the Canada Helps platform for registered charities and as well as for specific programs.

Details:

  • Participate in KWIC orientation and on-line training, including Health & Safety, AODA, Human Rights (Equity, Diversity &Inclusion, anti racism, microaggressions, etc.), job specific training (Drupal: website, KWIC Communications Manual and Style Guide)
  • Learn and use a variety of virtual shared platforms and digital tools for meetings, information sharing and electronic filing system, such as Zoom (Break out rooms, white board, etc.), Gmail, google calendar, doodle poll, TRELLO, drop box, etc.; follow work plan, track work hours and tasks using Microsoft Excel
  • Participate in Pinngauq Digital Training as required
  • Review evaluate KWIC social media and communication channels (Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, Mailchimp and Website), recommend and implement new strategies for outreach
  • Develop content and manage KWIC social media channels and website – for example, TRC resources/action items
  • Review KWIC’s profile on the Canada Helps website for registered charities, recommend and make changes to maximize effectiveness of presentation and donor engagement
  • Lead the creation of a new digital format for KWIC monthly newsletters and annual report
  • Opportunity: to develop a new logo and brand look for the TEACH Outside the Box program
  • Research and recommend strategies or tools for timely public engagement in world issues connected to local initiatives, as also connected to KWIC’s Global Community Network
  • Research and support the KWIC Fundraising Committee to develop a new digital event campaign
  • Participate in weekly meetings and collaborative learning using a shared leadership model; participate in mid-term and exit interviews
  • Commitment to learning about and work from decolonizing, anti-oppressive/anti-racist, feminist and popular education frameworks, and consensus decision making

 

Qualifications

Education/Experience:

  • Applicants must have completed a post secondary degree from a recognized institution
  • Relevant area of study or certification, include marketing and communications – and/or a combination of a degree and relevant experience and skills.

  • Excellent written, spoken and presentation skills (English)

  • Technical Proficiency: There is funding for Digital Skills Training in the project budget.
    • Microsoft office suite (especially Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc.)
    • Google programs (Gmail, Google Docs, Google Sheets, Google Drive, Google Meets etc.)
    • Dropbox
    • Zoom
    • Website Development
    • Graphic Design programs (i.e. Canva, photoshop)

Funder Eligibility Guidelines:

Interns hired by employers through the DS4Y program must meet the following criteria:

• Be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age at the start of the internship

• Has completed a post-secondary education at a recognized program

• Be legally entitled to work in Canada

• Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or person who has been granted refugee

status in Canada

• Must not be in receipt of Employment Insurance (EI) during the internship

• Self-assess as underemployed, meaning they are employed below their level of education

and/or hold part-time employment
