Effective community awareness of global issues includes working with educators to ensure that they have the confidence, tools, and resources to create inclusive and welcoming spaces that support social justice education in schools and the wider community.
TEACH Outside the Box Social Justice Certificate and Alternative Placement Program is a KWIC collaborative initiative comprised of Trent and community partners that launched in 2013.
TEACH unites theory with practice and fosters a network of social justice educators. It is based on a participatory education model that includes an interactive workshop series and community placements. TEACH is designed to support educators to become agents for change in their schools and communities.
The program runs between September and April annually. The application/registration process begins in June of each year from the TEACH website page.
Highlights of TEACH Outside the Box:
- Exploring critical education theories from various perspectives (global, Indigenous, anti-oppression, popular education, the arts)
- Engaging with different ways to teach (in and outside of the classroom)
- Integrating the theory with the practice of social justice education through a community-based alternative placement
- Belonging to a supportive cohort of educators committed to inclusive, equitable education
The Program is open to:
- Community educators and classroom teachers
- Trent/Queen's B. Ed Teacher Candidates (Alternative Settings Placement)
- Trent Teacher Education Stream students
- All others interested in Social Justice Education
2020-21 Program Partners:
Partner organizations supporting TEACH include KWIC, the Trent School for Education and Professional Learning, the TRACKS Program, Nourish, the New Canadians Centre, the Community Race Relations Committee of Peterborough, and all of the local classrooms and community educators.

KWIC Alternative Placements
Educators and teacher candidates may choose from a variety of placement opportunities with KWIC typically between November and May. Hours may be completed month by month, over March break, or during scheduled office hours.
Opportunities are to:
- Develop and lead Workshops for local classes and community groups using a Popular Education (Education for Change) framework, participatory and arts-based methodologies
- Liaise with local schools to connect KWIC Resources with classrooms
- Support KWIC Community Events such as International Women’s Day, SDG Community Forums, or Global Community Network
- Research workshop content and create appropriate curriculum outcomes
- Work directly with feminist, anti-oppressive, anti-racist, decolonization experts and approaches
