An informal discussion with Chiapas-based Afrozoque activist Semblance Concepción Suárez Aguilar, answering the question: "What impact has the increased paramilitary violence in Chiapas had on Indigenous communities, especially women?"

Moderated by Executive Director Sam Rockbrune, we invite community members to join Kawartha World Issues Centre for "Defendiendo La Vida" a solidarity event amplifying the experiences of Indigenous activists.

Semblance Concepción Suárez Aguilar is an Afrozoque woman from Chiapas. Acting as the Coordinator of the Nantik Meche organization, Aguilar is an educator and popular communicator. Her political practice and social research work has focused on the construction of indigenous women's rights from their own cultures.

November is Women Abuse Awareness Month. Join us from 2-3pm on November 29th as we discuss structural and societal causes of sexual and gender-based violence (GBV), intersectionality and human trafficking locally with the Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre (KSAC).

This event will be held online. A Zoom link will be sent out in advance.

Gzowksi College partnered with BIPOC student leaders in 2021-2022 to talk about “uncomfortable” things and we’re here to continue that conversation! Everyone is welcome to attend.

Ecological restoration seems to be a very abstract concept when it's just talked about in class. Therefore, a real interest goes unnerved in hearing about how it really gets done. This KWIC Conversation will be a follow-up from a panel of people who actively restore local ecosystems and will delve deeper into what came up at the panel. The conversation will be facilitated by Kira Nixon and Nick Weissflog. Kira is the interim president of the Society for Ecological Restoration - Trent University (SER-TU). Nick, a SER-TU member, had been looking forward to arranging the speaker panel on this topic for a year and is very happy there is a second part!

The Action and Justice Creative Reflections are an opportunity to engage with topics surrounding climate action and social justice through a creative outlet. This event entails four prompts for you to reflect on independently and then have the option to share. Feel free to mute yourself through this event and play some music, talk with friends, or enjoy the silence. Throughout the event we will be opening the floor for optional sharing and then continuing on with another prompt. By the end of the Action and Justice Creative Reflections you will have engaged with four different prompts that allow you to reflect and be creative while positioning yourself and identifying various factors that contribute to the topics we discuss. 

Use whatever media any like (paint, journaling, crayons, pastels, pencils, pens, clay, etc.) 

4 prompts will be used through the event with periods between for creativity!
